How to wear a bomber jacket

Beloved of fashion editors, street style stars and Ageless Rockers, the bomber jacket was first worn by fighter pilots in World War ll. Being more of a biker than a bomber woman, I’ve never actually worn one – but a combination of one reader’s enthusiastic response to Alan Partridge (see previous post), and spotting this khaki jacquard jacket in M&S (available HERE), has triggered a rethink:

I know what you’re thinking, can a bomber jacket ever look chic? My advice, is to wear this voluminous style with a pair of tailored cropped trousers/Capri pants and mid-heeled ankle boots, or a la Lucinda Chambers, over a dress. As my mum always used to tell me, (mainly when discussing green vegetables at Sunday lunch), ‘You won’t know until you try it.’ Experiment, give the bomber jacket a spin, before it flies out of the shops…

I’m a huge fan of bomber jackets too….the softer/the sloppier the fabric the better. Silk preferably. They look less ‘voluminous’ – so if anyone spots one – let me know. On the hunt…..

I have a reversible one from the Uniqlo X Catrine Roitfeld collaboration. It is one of the shorter ones, black on one side and camo print on the other.
So versatile!Lucinda’s bomber is fab on her; I was at the event where she wore it and she mentioned that it was from Topshop! I’ve never worn one either. Like you, I’m more biker than bomber, but the the right colour and the right embellishment could certainly tempt me. The Gucci ones are gorgeous (of course) and the M&S one you featured above is quite special if you can manage that olive green colour. I might have to investigate…

I got my first ever, a denim blue j crew one last year as an alternative to yet another denim jacket. To my surprise I wore it constantly in the summer with boyfriend or cropped jeans. Like you I spotted the m & s one last week but ruled it out on the basis that there will be loads of them everywhere… Personally I blame Mary Berry for this current resurgence!

I just received mine from Humanoid , my fave label this season.
They do a wonderful buttery beige leather one, but I went for the coarse linen one in a slub -mix of grey and navy .
I wore it yesterday over dungarees with Stan Smiths ,and felt I looked like my mother walking the dog .
Later on I had trying on session with cropped wideleg navy trousers and black Marant Patsha boots ,loved that.
Also with a silvery grey Humanoid dress and reckon a small heel will be needed .
The question is , shall I get that buttery leather one too?Catbird Farm says:
Zanna, I too love Humanoid, and OMG, that soft leather bomber of theirs is *gorgeous*. I like that it doesn’t scream “bomber” so will likely outlast the fad without looking dated. If you can afford it, go for it!

My 19 yr. old daughter bought a black bomber from Banana Republic last fall and she looks so chic in it…there’s no reason why an older woman wouldn’t too! Now a silk bomber–that would be fabulous!
Do you know what I would love? I would love for model to be shorter. I see these gorgeous outfits – flowing pants and sweaters – that would never looked lean and draped. Anyway, just my little lament for the day!

All look absolutely amazing. Maybe one to consider as never been a bomber fan before.
I love them too and the picks here. The japanese patterns are amazing. And mine is white and neoprene. Why creates a very different feel. Found your site thru Vanity and Me.
