Wear what you like
Wear whatever makes you feel happy, what you feel comfortable in, is the conclusion I rapidly came to when writing Style Forever. As that’s more of a Tweet than a book, I ploughed on. I’ve always believed in individual style (DIY haircuts, going clubbing in my grandad’s dressing gown) and think this is particularly true as we get older. It’s also the focus of a feature ‘The Age of the Individual‘ in The Edit, Net-a-Porter’s online magazine. There’s an interesting quote on individualism from New York Times fashion director Vanessa Friedman, ‘I think as long as there is this much product and collections are moving this fast, it will continue. You can’t keep buying into new trends and throwing things away every two months, it’s impossible. But in many ways it’s liberating – now we have a much broader universe with which to define ourselves.’
And from Leandra Medine founder of Man Repeller, ‘Getting dressed is no longer about abiding by a specific code so much as it is expressing yourself how you see fit…buy specific pieces that you love and buy them sparsely.’
Doing your own thing, works for me. Read the full article HERE.
Yes, yes, and yes again! Thanks Alyson, yes, you should dress as you please and not how the fashion of the moment dictates and I’m absolutely up for that. But I’m just going to set out a very small counter-argument. As you get older, and I’m speaking as a women approaching 70, you’ve got to be really careful about dressing ‘comfortably’ or in a scatter-gun way that would look like totally gorgeous on a 20-30 year old.
Personally, I always advocate that you have to have at least one eye on the ‘look’ of the day – then you adapt that look to your style, size, whatever. But I agree with you; express yourself through wearing what you damn well please, as long as it’s not ‘comfortable’. To my ears that sounds boring!
