Gillian Ayres exhibition (s)

Gillian Ayres abstract paintings have the same mood-enhancing affect as Matisse’s Cut-Outs or Hockney’s Bigger Splash. There’s a lovely exhibition of paintings and woodcuts from the artist’s six-decade-spanning career at the Alan Cristae gallery, London. It’s on for another week and well worth a trip; this blast of bold colour and pattern is guaranteed to perk you right up. Ayres was 87 in February, studied at Camberwell College of Art in the 1950s, taught at St Martin’s in the 1970s and has been awarded an OBE and made a Royal Academician but is not as widely recognised as her male contemporaries…

As with Hockney, it’s quite hard to find a picture of Ayres without a cigarette in hand, here’s one taken by George Wright:

The largest exhibition of Gillian Ayres’ work to date is on at the National Museum Cardiff, Wales until 3 September 2017. And there is a Gillian Ayres exhibition curated by the Alan Cristae Gallery at the Tremenheere Sculpture Garden, Penzance.
