Older and bolder
What with my new found camo love and the Mary Berry Effect (MBE), this autumn is turning into one big colour fest. So. The Modern Love sample sale,
in Brighton this weekend, is the perfect place to p-p-p-pick up some pattern. Designer Sarah Arnett is the doyenne of digital
print, and with prices starting at 40 quid, it’s well worth the train fare
down from London.
And whilst we’re on the subject of Mary Berry (sort of), her style status has been much-lauded of late, but the 77-year-old’s love of a Victoria sponge is quite impressive too, ‘I know that you should only have a small slice but I’m never going to stop eating cakes. I love it.’

Vibrantly colored, yes … too pastel or too precious and tiny … nope. We've all been warned that flower prints can look mumsey on older women. But what saves this example is the black between the face and flowers. Seems modernizing to me, as do the pearls with chain, rather than just the traditional uninterrupted string. Thanks for introducing this thought …

It's great that someone in their 70's can impact fashion (and baking) the way MB has. Style has no age-limit 😉
I'm all over vibrant botanical prints at the moment. There were some very good modern cuts to choose from and not just from designers, Zara's offerings were fab this year. I find the choice of the print and the cut of the garment makes all the difference between a fussy and a fab floral print piece, regardless of the age of the wearer.
Not sure how I'll feel about prints like that at 77, but Mary looks ok in them! Am doing a lot of black at the moment, precisely because of too many cakes! xCathy
As a 60-something (65, to be honest!)I tend to avoid prints if they are in danger of looking "old lady", but I do have some in my wardrobe from shops like Wallis and Zara that I enjoy wearing. I don't do pastels, but I also find that really bright colours aren't flattering either. Mary does pull it off though.

Monix – hadn't noticed that! Do you think it's make-up or sun damage? (makes note to by a moisturiser with built-in SPF).
Janin & Sue – yep, I think it's best to tread carefully. And I'd never wear pastels.
