Madhur Jaffrey starts rapping at 85
This state of perpetual Brexit Limbo makes the pursuit of joy and laughter all the more imperative. Hooray then for award-winning cookery writer and actor Madhur Jaffrey who has started rapping at the age of 85. You’re never too old to learn a new skill…I say rapping but it is more lip-synching (quite expertly) to New York rapper Mr Cardamom’s new single, ‘Nani’. The track is an homage to the Queen’s musician’s own Nani (Hindi for grandmother), a former social worker, who set up a trust to help homeless children in India. Jaffrey appears in the video as a Gangster Nani wearing a yellow beret and long silver wig, and giving it plenty of attitude. The video contains vintage clips from Jaffrey’s cookery shows and films, and ends with a crowded scene in a food truck that’s just brilliant. (Warning: it also contains expletives and one-finger gestures).
“85-years-old, 85-years-gold” is my favourite line.
Apparently, Madhur Jaffrey kept the yellow beret…
