The beauty of age
Around the world, each of Vogue’s September issues has ‘hope’ as its theme. And we could all do with a truckload of hope, going into this chaotic, Covid autumn. Italian Vogue has published 100 covers of incredible women including Bethann Hardison, Pat Cleveland and Patti Hansen, modern day hero Marcus Rashford is quite rightfully British Vogue’s cover star (along with Adwoa Aboah) and US Vogue has two illustrated covers by artists Kerry James Marshall and Jordan Casteel. But this wonderful story celebrating the beauty of age by photographer Seo Young-hee from Korean Vogue is my absolute favourite.
The story is called ‘ My grandmother who is as beautiful as a flower,’ and appears to give the names of the grandchildren rather than the almost 100-year-old grandmothers – or maybe it’s simply a case of lost in translation (?) Anyhow, the gorgeous woman wearing the paper crown, below, has three sons and four daughters, loves origami and credits her longevity to steady walking and keeping up with the news.
We Queen-Agers should all wear crowns…
Keep walking, stay hopeful. See the full Vogue Korea feature HERE.
Thanks Alyson for sharing these photographs from Korean Vogue. I really like the mood here and the smiling woman in her hanbok outfits. These are worn widely in Korean. I was taken in Seoul to a market with all the beautiful fabrics which the dressmakers offer for custom made outfits for female and male customers.
We all need Hope right now and it’s good to see it adopted as a theme. I’ve already got the September edition of British Vogue and will look at other variants online.
