Three things to watch over the long weekend

HOPE is making a comeback! And I’m here for it. Big time. If you’ve only seen edited highlights of Michelle Obama’s speech at the DNC in Chicago this week, it’s well worth tuning-in to the full 20-minutes (available HERE). So powerful, so emotional; she is a superb orator and this is a masterclass. ‘ Am I the only person stupid enough to speak after Michelle Obama,’ President Barack Obama subsequently admitted.

Oh and side note on Michelle Obama’s super-cool outfit. Details shared by New York Times fashion director Vanessa Friedman on Threads stated that the sleeveless tunic and trousers are from Monse (styled by Meredith Koop), apparently the former First Lady has been wearing this label for years.

More charisma and chemistry in abundance over on Channel 4, in the one-off special, Dame Judy and Jay: The Odd Couple. The esteemed actor and TV presenter met on a Christmas episode of The Repair Shop, have stayed in touch and become friends. Aw, bless. In this hour-long show the pair go on a road trip, sharing elements of their past lives with each other. They head to London’s East End, where Dame Judy has a go at selling plantain at Ridley Road Market. Then JD takes JB to the Old Vic theatre, where they both read Shakespeare. Spoiler alert: save some tissues if you’re watching after the Michelle Obama speech; this is deeply moving. Jay Blades is dyslexic, he left school at 15 without any qualifications, only learned to read at 51 and now he’s reciting Hamlet. Back in the East End, Jay’s pal DJ Ron teaches Dame Judy how to scratch. Turns out JD is a superb DJ.
Heartwarming stuff.

I’ve only watched one episode of The Lady in the Lake, on Apple TV+ starring Natalie Portman and Moses Ingram but I’ll be fully immersing myself in the murder-mystery series over the long weekend. Described by Lucy Mangan as ‘altogether masterly’, the TV adaptation of the best-selling book by Laura Lippman is an absolute cracker.
Enjoy the weekend. And let me know your recommendations. PS In other news, we’ve updated the TNMA shop.
Love this. I can hardly wait to vote Blue this fall.
