Know Your Seasonal Style: the checked trench coat
Last year I started the ‘Know Your Seasonal Style‘ series, a small edit of the clothes on my radar at a particular time. Rather than pictures of me in a khaki jumpsuit ad infinitum, this would illustrate the new seasonal items worth investing in. What I have found with this project is that it works best if the new item is combined with my wardrobe favourites. I feel more comfortable, I feel like me. Rather than awkwardly modelling a head-to-toe, brand new outfit as if getting photo-ready on the first day of term, I’m happier with my wardrobe favourites as back-up. Who isn’t? And really, this is the sensible way to shop. By figuring out what we like, what we have, what we need and what it goes with; the carefully chosen, versatile item slots straight into our wardrobe and instantly feels at home. Less stress, more style.
First up for spring 2019: the checked trench coat. The one photographed was on loan for the shoot from Essentiel Antwerp – the popular womenswear brand has just opened a London store and I’m wondering if I should pay it another visit. The cashmere sweater is from M&S. Phoebe Boyfriend jeans are from MiH. Loafers are from a Margaret Howell sample sale, several years ago, and the leather satchel was a gift from M. Hulot. The checked trench gives this everyday outfit an easy, Gentlewomanly upgrade. It’s a winner.
I hope you find this updated version of Know Your Seasonal Style useful. I definitely feel better about this new arrangement and hope it offers inspiration on which not-so-basic-basics to buy, or pinpoints the clothes in your wardrobe that are worth another look. The other day I received two compliments on my outfit from complete strangers, in the street. In a rush to get to the shops and back and then go off to interview someone, I grabbed one of my favourite pull-on-and-go looks. The Spry Workwear corduroy jumpsuit with my vintage leopard print coat and a pair of Veja trainers; (different outfit same outstanding coat formula). As getting dressed had been a grab-and-go moment and I wear these items a lot, I was delighted by the positive reaction – never underestimate the power of paying a compliment.
Getting it right is about knowing your style; wearing clothes that you can forget about, that are not forgettable…
