That’s Not My Age Podcast: Journalist and author Yasmin Alibhai-Brown
In the latest That’s Not My Age podcast I chat to the award-winning journalist and author Yasmin Alibhai-Brown about her esteemed career. The first regular columnist of colour on a national newspaper in the UK, and self-proclaimed liberal, anti racist, feminist Muslim, has gone on to write for all the major broadsheet titles.
We discuss ageism and sexism in the media and the immense pressure on women over-45 to look good. And of course we cover her latest book ‘Ladies Who Punch: Fifty Trailblazing Women Whose Stories You Should Know.’ I particularly enjoyed reading about the lesser known women, such as: Sophia Singh the forgotten suffragette and detective superintendent Shabnam Chaudhri, the first Asian/Muslim to hold that role in the Metropolitan Police Force. Alibhai-Brown’s top 50 champions other feminist writers, including: Reni Eddo-Lodge, Caroline Criado Perez and Laura Bates. Plus, a few women the author admits she doesn’t actually like but recognises for their extraordinary actions. (My lips are sealed, you’ll have to listen to find out). This fascinating book of fearless women is ideal company for the next lockdown.
Alibhai-Brown is reading ‘A Dutiful Boy: A Memoir of a Gay Muslim’s Journey to Acceptance‘ by Mohsin Zaidi, enjoys wearing colourful clothes and and likes a G&T.
