End of summer skincare – and 25% off Elemis
I’ve always been low-maintenance when it comes to make-up and grooming, I’m not sure I’ve ever had a ‘beauty regime’. But our skin does change as we grow older and, now that oestrogen has left the building, I’ve become a bit more interested in looking after my face. That doesn’t mean I’m obsessing over wrinkles or trying to reverse the ageing process, I’m just interested in having radiant, healthy-looking skin.

When it comes to daily moisturisers, I want a cream that’s light, easily absorbed, and not overly fragranced (I have sensitive skin, and eyes. I guess you could say I am easily irritated…). Elemis’ Pro-Collagen Marine Cream with SPF is an absolute winner. It’s the best moisturiser I’ve found, and I know beauty editors who say the same. The ‘Dream Cream’ is expensive but I find a little goes a long way; this jar will last for months. Mature skin can be dry, the Elemis moisturiser is super-hydrating and light with a creamy formula that doesn’t leave skin looking greasy. The last thing I want is to spend all day feeling like I’ve got something sticky on my face.
The Elemis Superfood Multi Mist was recommended by make-up artist Anna Durston, so I thought I’d give it a go. She suggests putting one in your bag to spritz your face and help refresh and nourish skin throughout the day. Personally, I prefer to leave it on my desk, to give myself a quick spray every now and then; I like the feeling of coolness on my skin and find the gorgeous fragrance uplifting.
The summer has been hot, wet and windy, and so my weather-beaten skin has been enjoying this end-of-season treat. The Pro-Collagen Renewal Serum is called a ‘retinol alternative’ which suits me fine, because I’m still a bit scared of retinol (more on this soon). I had been using the Marine Cream for a couple of weeks and just started applying the serum, beforehand, when I met up with my friend Linda (the TNMA podcast editor). Oh woe- I’ve just purchased my Elemis ‘necessities’ otherwise I’d be jumping for joy. Have been hooked on the pro collagen marine cream since my daughter introduced me to it when she worked on cruise ships as a beauty therapist years ago. Now in my mid 70’s I’ve graduated to the Ultra Rich day cream. You are absolutely right about the formula. Every now and then I balk at the price, buy something else, and always regret it. The cleansing balm original is another ‘indispensable’ item. I love the calming fragrance. Just wish I had waited another week to make my autumn purchase, but I’m sure lots of people will benefit from this great offer. Thanks Alyson, and yes, your skin does look beautiful.

I live in the United States and I have an app called Yuka with a scanner that will scan the barcode on food and cosmetic products and rate them. It will also breakdown the ingredients and let you know why something is bad, poor, good, or excellent. I use it all the time. You would be surprised how many things we put on our skin are unhealthy for us. I use a tinted serum with a 40 SPF and the brand is Ilia. It is excellent. Just letting everyone know that some of the common products are not good for us.

The environmental working group skin deep rates the Ilia tinted serum with spf a 7 out of 10 rating. (high hazard). I had looked at trying it before I checked. I always seek out the ewg verified products or only buy products with a 2 or less. Most of the Elemis products rate better than Ilia. Just an FYI since you want to seek out safe skincare.

I’ve used Elemis for years, discovered it about 30 years ago when I was 40. absolutely love it. My current favourites are the Morning and Evening Matrix creams, I alternate these with the pro collagen and always use the marine oil underneath. I like the eye cream and face masks too. The cleansing balm is amazing. I usually buy mine via QVC, when they have a Todays Special value on Elemis it’s always amazing value.

Started using Trinny London skincare (match to me online) from March this year. My skin has never been better. Wish they had been available when I was younger (currently 56). Better later than never. Highly recommend.

I have tried skincare lines purchased in drugstores and high end department stores. I found a line made in Canada called UniKa. I met the owner and she went over the ingredients used in her skin care and cosmetics line. My skin feels amazing every time I use the day and night moisturizer.
As for Elemis, I recently returned from a cruise where Elemis products were used (shampoo, conditioner, body wash, hand soap and body lotion). I appreciated that the products were not heavily scented.Jean Shaw says:

Thanks Alyson for this skincare article. My newest find is Avene Tolerance Hydra 10 moisturiser. I bought this new version of holiday in a French pharmacy. Used morning and evening it’s sterile preservative and fragrance free. It’s working well for me. For daytime I use this below Roche Posay sunscreen. Factor 30 and 50. A good combination of textures. Otherwise my staple is Caudalie night cream. It’s thicker and more expensive product but a little goes a long way. Both seem to be effective.
Range I like and have used for a few years is Caudalie Resverstol-Lift. There’s a serum, a day cream and a night cream. It’s the latter I mostly use. Some beauty websites offer gift boxes with a regular size pot plus travel size samples of the eye cream or serum. Worth looking out for going forward this autumn. Though I do see from the dedicated Caudalie website that prices creep up by several £ each time I want to order some.

Until I hit perimenopause my skincare routine just consisted of washing my face. Since then I’ve been using retinol (pm) and copper peptides (am) both from The Ordinary. Finding a good SPF has been hard, because ideally I’d like a mineral one but they tend to feel heavy on my skin. I got given a tiny freebie of a marine collagen by Vogue a few years ago, but didn’t see much difference from using it 2-3 times. Maybe I need to splurge on a big jar and see?
