Four ways to wear baggy jeans

— by Alyson Walsh

Baggy jeans always remind me of Stone Roses-era Manchester. Before the Haçienda was turned into luxury apartments. Step on 30-odd years and I’m feeling the love for slouchy, wide-leg jeans, once more. Today, unlike my friend’s teenage daughters, I don’t want to look like a late-80s raver. Forget the super-sized T-shirt, bucket hat and retro trainers; here are four ways to look chic in baggy jeans.

Keep it classic: Tuck-in a cotton, striped shirt, pile on the pearls and finish off with a pair of loafers.

Channel the work wear vibe: Slip a blue utility jacket (this one is from the menswear department) on over a simple vest top and swing your not-too-baggy pants.

You can’t go wrong in jeans and a T-shirt: Go for a slinky, boat neck tee with an elegant drape that looks neat tucked into jeans. Then, just add statement earrings.

Volume control: Try a cropped jacket (one that ends at around waist-level) to balance proportions and counteract the casual nature of baggy jeans.

Skinny jeans aren’t the only option – and in summer wider trousers are better than a skintight sausage leg. Think of your nether regions! Baggy jeans: they’re more comfortable, flattering and versatile than you think.

STYLE NOTES

Uniqlo’s baggy jeans come in a range of colours, including soft pink. The sizing is quite generous so I went down a size to get the right fit on the waist; with a wider leg style getting the waist and the length right is important. And the good news is – if you need to get the hems turned up, Uniqlo offers a free alterations service in all their stores.

If you prefer a more tapered look, I’d recommend the Boyfriend Jeans. I was pleased to hear that sustainability and reducing the environmental impact of manufacturing are being addressed by Uniqlo. More information on Uniqlo’s Blue Cycle process HERE.
