Kristin Scott Thomas in Burberry’s Christmas campaign
— by Alyson Walsh
Something fabulous for a rainy Friday, Kristin Scott Thomas looking super-chic in Burberry’s Christmas campaign. In the advert, KST is travelling home to see friends and family (including Naomie and Valerie Campbell, M.I.A and Matt Smith) in a classic Burberry trench, gold-plated link earrings and a monogramed silk scarf with the company’s new logo, designed by Peter Saville. The campaign is entitled ‘Close Your Eyes and Think of Christmas,’ which is the exact opposite of what I’m doing right now, can’t believe it’s December already…

It’s not very Christmassy, Daisy but I do think that KST is wonderful and I’m always happy to see her standing/sitting/starring in a major role. Doubt I’ll be buying into the Burberry check anytime soon, though….

Agree it’s a ghastly ad, all the people look like automatons. The antithesis of holiday joy. Love KST, she’s a beautiful woman under any circumstances, but that harsh, heavy makeup, what a shame. Dated and unflattering. But nonetheless, so happy to see KST (and other women of her age) featured front and center, even if the production team did miss coming anywhere close to delivering an appealing campaign. Think the new logo is quite nice though. Not averse to a bit of Burberry in the wardrobe.

Agree with you about the Cheistmas countdown Alyson. I looked at the video clip. Rather classic given the shake up under the new Creative Director Riccardo Tisci, ex-Givenchy creative director. Most interesting part is the pair of Naomi Campbell and her well-preserved 60something mother dressed head to foot in the old Burberry plaid outfits, not moving and looking waxen.
The new visual language of the recently unveiled Thomas Burberry monogram on the silk scarf around the neck of Kirsten Scott Thomas is also worthy of note. I prefer her wearing less harsh makeup but a good gig for an older, well-known theatre actress no doubt. Thanks for bringing the campaign to our attention.- Isobel says:
It’s quite beautiful, but all rather eerie. I agree with you, Mrs Tonia, about Kristin’s makeup in the pic above, but she looks much softer at the dinner table… mind you, I had to stop and start it a number of times to catch all the detail! Her outfit is lovely and classic, including her blouse, and I love the pearl ring. I would wear that scarf.

I forgot to mention the new chunky sans-serif typeface on the Burberry website.
What is fun is seeing the Vivienne Westwood collaboration all in the celebrated, then out of style under former director Christopher Bailey, plaid. Here’s a bit of subversion and punk though of an expensive sort.- Alyson Walsh says:
Agree, Mrs Tonia. I do quite like the punk-ed up collaboration, the Vivienne Westwood jacket is fantastic.

I love a bit of Burberry but a little goes a long way!
I have to agree with those who found the Christmas ad rather joyless- they all rather looked a bit unhappy to be celebrating a Christmas- even if they were beautifully turned out! - Isobel says:
I watched the whole ad… don’t you think it’s rather SPOOKY?!!!
- maudie says:
A very cheerless and sombre ad but always remarkably good to see Kristin Scott Thomas looking so totally MAGNIFICENT in a timeless classic. (She would look magnificent wrapped in turkey foil!). ps We don’t sit around in Burberry PJ lookalikes in our house like Ms Campbell and her mum looking oh so enigmatic and serene. PJ’s maybe but not quite so obvious as these (putting it politely).
- Wendy in York says:
Nice to see my dog in the show – but those checks 🙁
- Christine says:
It’s nice to see a grown up looking like an old-school grown up every once in a while (not to mention the stories her face tells).
- maudie says:
Christine – wouldn’t it be oh so wonderful if Old-School grown up/bit glamorous was normal for day time schlepping! Alyson – could a post be engineered around daytime glam?
- Boadicea says:
I’d sworn off commenting here but have given in! I’m with Daisy: “joyless, stiff”, and not one whit conducive to buying even a pocket hankie. It misses any sort of Christmas spirit by a checked mile.

What a joyless ad. Stiff and cold people in stiff and cold clothes. Why can’t KST sit? Plenty of seats on the train. Doesn’t make me want any of their stuff. Sorry
