Summer style: blue and white always looks right
To me, the glorious combination of blue and white immediately signals summer. Whether you’re in a city or by the seaside, this vibrant coupling always stands out. Blue is the coolest colour and it looks immaculate placed against a white backdrop. Just think of Greek Island architecture, Delft Blue pottery, Breton stripes and Matisse’s Nude cut-outs. Fresh, sporty, super-chic – this blue and white synergy is a surefire winner. And at this time of year, you’ll find oceans of clothes in these versatile summer shades.
From sky to royal, indigo to navy, my selection of multi-tasking blue shirts are seeing plenty of daylight, right now. And, I’m into this slightly boxier shirt shape. The Resort Shirt, pyjama or pop-over style can be found at Toast (the blue poplin shirt in the photos is Toast but this colour is now sold out), Eileen Fisher, Cos and Arket. The shorter length looks great with baggy trousers or open, over a sleeveless dress. Try a cotton top with a slinky silk skirt and Tevas. Here, I’m wearing the Kin at John Lewis balloon trousers (also sold out) but for something similar, take a look at this sale bargain from Proenza Schouler, or Boden’s turn-up linen trouser. Balance out the baggy trouser proportions with a pair of stompy sandals. Big is the gig.
STYLE NOTES: organic cotton poplin shirt loaned from Toast (no longer available in blue. Similar at Cos HERE and Three Graces has a linen version reduced in the sale). The balloon trousers, I bought from Kin at John Lewis (now sold out but always worth keeping an eye on this style as it’s repeated every season). Chunky sandals were a gift from Grenson last year. Chevron patchwork denim and leather bag loaned from independent label Hopeful.

Great look on you Alyson in photo. Good work Claire. Blue and white against Regency architecture with its white stucco and white hydrangeas. Lovely.
I know you like white trousers and white shoes sandals boots but I wear none of the above.
My blue and white outfits are composed with denim or navy trousers or skirts. Lighter tops be they Breton shirts, men’s type shirting or white linen or broderie Anglais blouses or t-shirts. Works better this way round for my size shape. On the more short rounded size.
Charming frocks featured. I’m wearing greens and yellows and white on holiday in extreme heat. Back home and in cooler temperatures back into dark greens. And several dark blue dresses. Like a favoured full skirted ikat weave from Toast pre pandemic. Still looking great. This summer with yellow or olive suede footwear maybe a colourful leather belt at waist for less wafty appearance when it’s more manageable heat.
