How to wear a bomber jacket
Carine Roitfeld wears hers with a pencil skirt, Lucinda Chambers over a floral dress, Keith Richards, on stage in Cuba. Beloved of fashion editors, street style stars and Ageless Rockers, the bomber jacket was first worn by fighter pilots in World War ll. Being more of a biker than a bomber woman, I’ve never actually worn one – but a combination of one reader’s enthusiastic response to Alan Partridge (see previous post), and spotting this khaki jacquard jacket in M&S (available HERE), has triggered a rethink:
Also from M&S, this black embroidered style, available HERE. (There’s also a longer length version but this has practically sold out, I tried on something similar in COS and decided that shorter styles are best).
I know what you’re thinking, can a bomber jacket ever look chic? My advice, is to wear this voluminous style with a pair of tailored cropped trousers/Capri pants and mid-heeled ankle boots, or a la Lucinda Chambers, over a dress. As my mum always used to tell me, (mainly when discussing green vegetables at Sunday lunch), ‘You won’t know until you try it.’ Experiment, give the bomber jacket a spin, before it flies out of the shops…
And here’s a bunch of bombers:
I just love bomber jackets – do wear one and show it to us!!! Love the subtle green of Linda V Wright’s bomber and look at Lucinda Chambers – that’s elegance for you. You’ve inspired me to get one, thanks!
