The velvet party jacket
For a trip to New York and two Style Forever events, I’ve been thinking that the Once in a Lifetime Jacket needs a companion. A 24-hour, go-everywhere velvet jacket to take me from brunch to book-signing and never look out of place. The plan is to wear my tuxedo to the Trailblazers fashion conference at CUNY (details and tickets HERE), but the book launch party at Michele Varian’s store calls for something slouchy and sumptuous. Hillier Bartley’s velvet military jacket is ideal. A wonderful amalgamation of my favourite elements of style: khaki, military and velvet – add denim jeans and bingo! What’s not to like, apart from the price? I’ve included the Hillier Bartley in my latest post for the FT’s How To Spend It, ‘The smart way to wear khaki’. Though being a journalist not an investment banker, I’m wary that a trip to New York is expensive enough without a splurge before Heathrow.
Fortunately, there are plenty of alternatives: J Crew’s Regent blazer in warm spruce or Boden’s lovely red velvet jacket and Topshop’s pink crushed velvet blazer As the Once in a Lifetime jacket is black, I’m considering other colour options for the velvet party jacket. And one showbiz item is enough, everything else will be under the radar – apart from a pair of statement earrings.
