More Gentlewoman Style at Margaret Howell spring/summer 2016
— by Alyson Walsh
Margaret Howell is the one catwalk show, at London Fashion Week, I get out of bed for on a Sunday morning. There are never many surprises but one of my favourite British designers knows how to dress the elegant tomboy, beautifully. For spring/summer 2016, I was pleased to see: the paper bag waist, a flash of red and the polka dot neckerchief. And, if you were in two minds about Teva sandals, think again…

They got the right shade of orange but the wrong tailor.

The point is Margaret Howell’s aesthetic is for oversized garments cut just right to flatter a variety of body shapes .Genius designer, her clothes go on and on. Love.

Lovely – just lovely, it looks effortless. I love Margaret Howell – not that I could ever afford her or suit black or orange , but thank heavens she exists as a nice counterpoint to some of the other designers

I could wear those! With my short grey hair and wider girth the look might come across more like a competent gym teacher, but I could make it work.

Ooh I love those pants. I don’t care how much extra weight I’m carrying around my middle, I want my pants on my waist. it’s the only place they a re comfortable on me, yeah for waisted pants again!

Margaret Howell is fantastic. Everything is always so soothing and ordered; the details are just perfect and discreet. Worth saving up all those pennies for…mind you, I’m still not convinced by those Tevas.

I think you’d have to be wearing Margaret Howell to get away with them, Sue!

It’s a funny thing with Margaret Howell , she doesn’t seem to follow the latest fashion but rather anticipates subtle changes that are coming along . I have quite a lot of her pieces , no I’m not wealthy but we have one of her discount store near us which puts them within my price range & they really do seem to look good for years . The fabrics are the best & the tailoring is second none . The women’s trousers have all the complicated inner stiffening & edging that come with a good pair of men’s trousers . I love the quality of her coats , jackets & shirts too . As you can see , I’m a big fan

Wendy – I often buy Margaret Howell stuff at the sample sales in London, but definitely need to pay a visit to the discount store soon.

Oh,I heard for the first time about her and love her at first sight. I need these trousers and neckerchief badly and ASAP 🙂
Yes,this are those crushes we didn’t know we have 🙂

Margaret Howell is my dream designer – out of my price range, sadly, but she sets the bar I try to emulate with other things that never are quite as wonderful as I’m sure her construction is sublime. Not many places in the US carry her things, which seems a shame. Gentlewoman indeed…I love that her whole line is timeless, and truly designed to live in for ages.

Those colours are delicious and it’s not often I look at clothing on the runway and think, wow, I could actually wear that. But I wonder if designers will ever figure out that odds are pretty good if they have their models actually break a smile & look as though they’re enjoying life (not to mention the show and — hello! — the clothing) they might interest more people in what they’re offering. Still not a big fan of ankle-length pants, though. They seem to be one of those trends that looks great on other people but just make me look as though I’ve either shrunk my jeans or had an unexpected growth spurt.

Bits & pieces of all look lovely….the trouser suit, the orange sweater, the neckerchief, just not sure about the whole ensemble!

I had never heard of Margaret Howell until a couple of months ago. Love that orange sweater. And the cropped pant with brogues. I remember that style of pant in the nineties, at least that style of waist. I’m not sure I could go there again. But it’s probably a moot point. Since it’s unlikely I would find her designs in Canada…at least my part of Canada.
