On my radar this week
There’s something about corduroy. Perenially chic and cosy, I’m wearing this groovy fabric non-stop right now. When I posted the outfit below on Instagram, with the caption ‘Double corduroy – it’s a bit Fisk but it feels good;’ quite a few followers asked what Fisk was. So, if you haven’t seen this hilarious Australian series about middle-aged lawyer Helen Tudor-Fisk, who loves an oversized camel suit, bookmark it for Christmas binge-watching (available on Netflix and ITV).
There’s a more in-depth feature on corduroy coming soon for subscribers. Including how to wear these fantastic, pull-on cord cargo pants from Boden.
On the subject of Antipodean TV, Channel 4’s After the Party is my latest must-watch series. The show created by Robyn Malcolm and Dianne Taylor is intense, gripping and grown-up. A 59-year-old actor at the top of her game, Robyn Malcolm is superb as Penny (the show’s main character), a no-nonsense science teacher who regularly gets her kit off as a life drawing model – and we are all for seeing more positive depictions of ageing bodies on screen. Set in Wellington, New Zealand, the six-part thriller is a realistic portrayal of a married couple who split up after an incident at a party ( it’s not what you think) and the on-going fallout five years later. Excruciating and unmissable.
Interesting fact: Robyn Malcolm and Peter Mullan who plays her ex-husband Phil in After the Party are a real-life couple.
When I featured my favourite Muji T-shirt this summer, I mentioned the puzzling lack of fashion availability on the Japanese brand’s website. And, lo, I seem to have manifested an improvement. The new Muji Labo label is available online and (exclusively) at the Covent Garden store – I went to a press preview and this is a lovely range of not-so-basic basics. I’m into the chocolate brown jumper, the recycled wool blazer and the down collar coat.
And finally, bring on the knitted wool neckerchief. It makes the perfect draught-excluder and is easier to wear than a great big scarf. Striped versions are available at Beyond Nine ( above), Sandro and Madewell. And knitwear designer Jo Gordon always has a natty neckerchief in her collection. If you’re handy with a pair of knitting needles, Wool & the Gang has a DIY kit.
For maximum winter cosiness, combine a knitted neckerchief and your favourite corduroy pieces:

Hello Alyson. Like you I’ve been watching After the Party. Well-acted unusual drama especially the NZ setting. I too am a fan of corduroy which I’ve been wearing extensively as temperatures have fallen. I’ve got a range of garments on rotation from a fine needle cord teal dress from Toast to several pairs of trousers. Favourites had been semi-elasticsted Cos trousers from previous years in black and dark green. On constant rotation. Now I’m wearing a more fashionable shape wide leg trousers in a more wide whale cord with some stretch I picked up a few months ago in M & S. A revelation. I’d never tried on any trousers from there. The price quality ratio keen, the style and fabric perfect in a claret colour plus an inky blue. So comfortable. So affordable.
I’ve got a more formal black cord blazer from Cos to wear over dresses this season. It’s a great fabric that I’ve worn since I was a teenager.
Thanks for recommending Fisk. Will check that out. Also the Muji recommendation. I used to buy things from the branch next to Liberty’s long ago.
