2014: The Year of Grown-up Glamour

I’ve decided that 2014 is going to be The Year of Grown-Up Glamour. No more going to the local shops unwashed or falling asleep clutching a packet of face wipes, this year I’m going to do things properly. Make more of an effort. Once I get over the jet-lag and holiday sickness (I miss New York). The best way to overcome post-vacation blues is to catch-up with old friends – so all those people who promised me a birthday drink, can put their money where their mouth is, pronto – and plan things to look forward to. One exhibition I can’t wait to see is The Glamour of Italian Fashion at the V&A (5 April – 27 July 2014), don’t you just love this embellished sixties coat (below)? I’d wear it to death with a pair of faded old jeans. Pure casual glamour.

I’m also looking forward to seeing Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts appear in a film together for the very first time. They play mother and daughter in August: Osage County – and both looked gorgeous at the Palm Springs Film Festival a few days ago…

and i had decided to return my brocade top larry got me but now you have me thinking again….shoot!
I like the idea of Glamouir versus the grunge look of distressed jeans with sequin tops YUK and the JCrew look of a tee shirt with a full on costume jewelry necklace is way over done. I just wish we were offered more choices in the stores because it seems like one size fits all has become one style fits all.

Hi Alyson..someone gave my daughter ( first job out of college) wise advise recently about dressing for the workplace. She is a high corporate flyer and told her to style her wardrobe around the position she hoped to seek, keeping her sights high. I thought it wise advise and decided to follow it for myself as well. Once I figure out who I want to emulate…it will be even easier! 😉

I am going to "grow up" this year too. It's so easy to fall into the rut of running out the door for a quick errand in work-out clothes. I am definitely going to make an effort to pull myself together…which is easy if I could just step away from the computer and give myself the time! I'm pretty low-key, so it shouldn't take much. Im also going to make a huge effort to only buy things I will REALLY wear. Two goals that should be easy to meet.
LOVE your blog…and sense of humor!Yes please. In fact, this is a really big deal for me. Even as an elderly and fully mature woman, I'm still told I'm "cute". Nice in it's way, and better than some things that could and have been said to me or (yikes!) about me. But, while I'll always be short and compact, I will get better at having just a hint, a little touch of understated sophistication this year.

Thank you!I bought a vintage pale-pink cashmere cardigan, fitted, waist-length,beaded along the opening and I wore it over the Christmas holidays with jeans. Felt as if it qualified for a touch of "grown-up glamour" and it was surprisingly easy to wear that way. Thanks for the label and the inspiration!
I'm perhaps nit-picking here, but much as I love both Streep and Roberts and will enjoy seeing them play mother and daughter, I'm curious about this crunching of the generational span. It's biologically possible, yes, but Streep would have to have been a mother at 18. . . . Just because we're over 60 doesn't mean we're old enough to be anyone's mother . . . 😉materfamilias – that's a fair point, and I hadn't even thought about the generational crunching – possibly because Julia Roberts doesn't look her age…
A Note on Style – same here. I'm pretty low-key but definitely need to step away from the computer and allow more time to get ready. Time to ditch the last-minute dash!

A good resolution, I think. I try not bothering about grooming etc, but I find I feel so much better in myself when I've made a bit more effort.
Somehow, if I've got black circles under my eyes and a headache from lack of sleep, a bit of concealer and blusher actually makes me feel more energetic and healthier. Odd but true.
Hear hear for the year of glamour! Come to think of it why stop at a year? I think I'll apply the principle to the next decade for the hell of it. It's reaffirming to hear others hankering for some glamour too. It's very easy, especially now in winter for me to get into a "wear what is warm and comfortable" rut day to day. So from now on I shall bear in mind that this is the year of glamour!
One thing I learned in life is to love what makes you happy and to cherish every moment you spend with your family, friends or love ones because everything that we have now on earth is temporary. Well, thank you for inspiring us with your great art work.

The Year of Grown-Up Glamour! Love it! And I also love Julia Roberts dress! I do not know if I will see the movie…Streep's character appears to be my own mother! It may be too close to home…but I will think about it!
